Wake Up! Waltz
Wake Up! Waltz is a month long dance spectacle connecting Chicagoans through interactive rooftop performances of the Waltz. This May-June 2013, Monday – Thursday, 8-10 a.m., an innovative, colorful, and vibrant choreography leaves transit and pedestrian commuters dancing their way to the desk. Voluminous and eye-catching costumes serve as art pieces in and of themselves, the essential tone and concept of the show. Audiences in West Loop, South Loop, Uptown, and Logan Square participate in this visual “wake up call” while driving traffic toward neighborhood business; these “variations on a theme” connect urban residents to the city as a whole. In January 2012, Ms. Davis relocated to Chicago from Buenos Aires. Commuting to the Loop from the suburbs daily, she viewed the outstretch of flat rooftops overlooking the city as an untapped stage. The result was the Waltz: a lively, colorful, installation sparked by the repetition of outrageous costumes and dance. To date, the project has successfully established a production timeline and base team including Jamie Coffey Reynolds, Choreographer, and two student interns; compiled a short list of local business sponsors; identified cultural, city, and university partners including Colombia College Dance Center and SAIC Design (providing students with the opportunity to design and perform in exchange for university credit); designated sites and rooftop venues; outlined a project budget; and launched a website with Lyon Communications. Production add-ons including a student photographer, designer, and dance captain are currently underway. An interactive website invites users to post and share documentation of the Waltz as a collective, second-hand performance. Goals and objectives of the project include public arts education and community partnerships; socio-economic leverage and development; design, documentation, and access to multi-media performances and archives; evaluation and expansion of scalable work.
