Birdie's Bookmobile is a school bus we have converted into a bookmobile that helps make quality culturally diverse children's literature more accessible to youth in Detroit.

In addition to the books that can be borrowed, we also have brand new books children can take home and keep.

Detroit is a book desert with limited access to libraries and booksellers. Only 19% of households in Wayne County have 100 or more books -- 100 books is considered the threshold for a print-rich environment.

We partner with community organizations to help get books into the hands and homes of children and families and help put children's books within reach.

Birdie's bookmobile will begin providing services on planned stops with partner organizations in the 48207, 48214, 48215, and 48216 zip codes beginning in June.

At each stop on our route, children can either grab a book to go, sit and read, or participate in our literacy enrichment programming.
