Old Fifth Burial Ground Restoration

This is the burial cemetery for many of Cape Ann's first settlers, including Richard Tarr in 1731, and soldiers from the French and Indian war, the American Revolution, war of 1812 and Civil Wars, as well as Rockport's own Hannah Jumper in 1869.

Unfortunately, this burial ground (across from Front Beach), while very visible to town folks and tourists, has many broken and sunken graves. In addition, many stones are covered with moss and lichen and have not been cleaned in decades.

Rockport's DPW take care of mowing the grounds, but do not attend to the gravestones.

As a Board member of the Sandy Bay Historical Society, I have been asked to chair a new seven member Committee that is tasked with the restoration of this important burial ground.
