DIY: Hair

We are very pleased to announce our November 2024 grantee DIY: Hair. Jelahn Prentiss is making a difference in the lives of African ancestry girls and teens by teaching them how to care for their hair. Congratulations Jelahn.

In her words, "My project is dedicated to uplifting and building young girls’ confidence by teaching them how to care for their hair. Many girls with African ancestry haven’t had the opportunity to learn proper hair care techniques for their unique hair textures, which require specific products and care to stay healthy. Without this knowledge, they may experience hair damage, impacting their confidence and self-esteem. This program not only teaches practical hair care skills but also explores the rich history and cultural significance of natural hair, helping girls take pride in their heritage. It’s essential to empower them to see the beauty and strength in their natural hair, especially in a society that often stigmatizes Black hair."
