Alebrije Bicycle Competition
In the 1930s Pedro Linares had a fever dream of fantastic animals dancing about screaming the nonsense word "Alebrije!" Disney used alebrijes as spirit animals in the movie Coco, bringing these creatures to us in a new way.
In Santa Rosa, Dia de los Muertos is one of the few celebrations that blurs our ethnic lines and unites us as a community. Alebrije Bikes are part piñata, part bicycle, and 100% fun. They don't exist yet, but with the right effort they could become an integral part of our local celebrations.
What I've noticed as I've worked on this project is that financially well off students will undertake the project just because it's fun, while students who participate in the assisted lunch program, for example, are motivated by the idea of winning a prize.
