Hyphenated America
We believe that in embracing our identities as hyphenated Americans, we can help make the complex and confusing immigration system, its associated laws and policies more accessible and less intimidating for others. Hyphenated America is a civic education platform committed to making immigration laws and policies easier to understand for young people. Currently, there is a lack of accurate immigration education in the United States. This combined with a polarized political climate and economic uncertainty makes understanding the basics and nuances of immigration essential to young Americans. We offer a variety of resources to help make the topic more approachable including accessible guides, a podcast wherein we interview leading journalists, politicians, and professors, and a newsletter.
Since our launch in July of 2020, we have interviewed a number of leaders within the immigration space, including immigration advocate and DACA recipient Juan Escalanate, Wall Street Journal immigration reporter Michelle Hackman, actor in ABC’s Fresh off the Boat Hudson Yang, co-host of the political podcast In The Thick Julio Ricardo Varela, writer Hulu’s Ramy Maytha Alhassen, and author of Hatemonger Jean Guerrero. Our work has also been featured on Al Jazeera. We have additionally collaborated with organizations such as RAICES, the San Antonio based largest immigration legal services non-profit organization in Texas and Al Otro Lado, a bi-national organization providing no-cost legal and humanitarian aid for deportees, refugees, and separated families.
Gen Z is more diverse and more politically engaged than any other generation. We are aimed at an audience that is coming into and learning the contours of their politics, and our resources currently accumulate over 40,000 monthly impressions. Hyphenated has the capacity to change the educational and political field!
