Swing Equality for the Differently-Abled
Disability-accommodating playground equipment is rare at public parks as is & what little exists can be prohibitively difficult for low-income & mobility-challenged folks to visit. The few swings with added supports still exclude adults, since they assume the help of a parent/caregiver to lift them onto the child-sized swing & give them a push. These restraints are too small for grown-ups even if they had a companion to operate the swing who was also strong enough to transfer an adult from their walker/wheelchair. A wheelchair platform swing operated by a pull chain would allow residents of all ages who require accommodating equipment to finally enjoy an experience that most take for granted, delighting young & old alike for years to come.
A grant from the Austin Awesome Foundation will help fund a swing at the Mary Lee Foundation's Villa Elaine apartments for low-income individuals with disabilities.
