Preserving Historic Gloucester Garb
The AHS is seeking funds to preserve 19th and early 20th century men's, women's, and children's clothing and accessories found in steamer trunks in the old firehouse. The clothing was worn by ordinary villagers--fishermen's wives innkeepers, merchants, servants--and by wealthy visitors who flocked to Gloucester in the summers. After being stored for decades in an unheated building, the fabrics have badly deteriorated. The clothing is under threat of destruction. We aim to catalogue and clean as much as we can, save examples and photos to share with the public, and place the rest in acid-free archival storage boxes for safekeeping. I am reapplying after two rounds in which I presented slide shows, but this time I would bring samples of the clothing to show. Thank you for your consideration.
