Personal Empowerment Program (PEP)
Our Awesome Project is to provide up to 20 girls in Hawaii Youth Correctional Facility (HYCF) a four-part workshop designed to assist them in successful transition from the correctional facility to long-term placement or reintegration into home and community. The intent is to provide these high risk girls with skills they will need to guide them through life and lead them on a successful track of healthy choices and self-management.
PEP is based on a proven evidence-based curriculum, Skills You Need: Helping You Develop Life Skills, which assists high risk girls with self regulation, problem solving, relationship building, service learning and leadership development. Content curriculum addresses: Looking after your body; rest and sleep; food, diet and nutrition; exercise; doing the right thing; looking after your mind; stress and health; the good and healthy mind; and the power of positive thinking.
Four two-hour workshops will be developed by Hoola Na Pua Starfish Mentoring Program Director to help develop life skills through fun, experiential and interactive activities designed to develop key physical, mental and emotional habits, skills and maintenance. The workshops held at the HYCF will be broken down as follows:
Session 1: Self-Regulation & Managing Stress
Activity - Yoga/Coloring books
Session 2: Fun Health and Safe Exercise
Activity - Zumba/Dance exercise
Session 3: Protective Factors and Healthy Mind
Activity - Cooking for the brain/Mind body connection
Session 4: Self Care and Health and Hygiene
Activity - Hygiene products/Hair/cosmetology/Rest & sleep
Success and outcomes of this program will be measured, qualitatively and quantitatively, with a pre- and post- survey self-evaluating measuring how each girl rates herself (on a scale of 1-10) in the four areas of life skills, prior to the workshops and after completion. Additionally, each girl will be asked to come up with a personal transition plan addressing each session.
