Solar Sprouts
Engineers for a Sustainable World at University at Buffalo (ESW-UB) is partnering with the Centers Health Care - Buffalo Center, which provides a range of therapy and other medical services for both short and long-term residents serving predominantly low-income populations. To support the Center's mission of growth and rehabilitation, our team is designing a sustainable tabletop garden with both bench and wheelchair-accessible seating. The tabletop garden will have an irrigation system and will collect rainfall from the table cover supported by a solar panel that will power an irrigation water pump. Our project educates the community on sustainable practices and technologies and allows recovering residents to participate in therapeutic gardening.
By creating an accessible, low-maintenance garden on center grounds, we wanted to encourage sustainable gardening to people with disabilities who would have otherwise been unable to participate in outdoor activities.
