Makers Without Borders - Makers Sin Fronteras
This is a revised project proposal for the approved “Makers Without Borders - Makers Sin Fronteras” providing bilingual science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) activities for US immigrant families and was originally designed to be hosted in a novel learning environment: U.S. Consulates. The mastermind behind the idea to provide free Spanish and English STEAM explorations - with the goal of bringing science discovery opportunities to Latino families in a culturally relevant way - was crafted by Junkyard Social Club (formally the Hopper), a community hub for revolutionary STEAM experiences and immersive art. Together with Centro Latino Americano para las Artes, Ciencia y Educación (CLACE), we had planned to launch this project’s pilot event at the Guatemalan Consulate in Denver, Colorado in 2020.
Due to the spread of Covid 19, the project would like to shift from an “in-person” environment to an “at-home” experience. We’ve created multiple maker projects for kids that utilize recycled materials; including: balloon powered cars, tissue paper kites, and LED paper lanterns. Our goal will be to still serve as many families as possible in Colorado. We will work with CLACE to identify immigrant families with kids between 6-12 years old. Materials will be sent to their homes along with instructions in English and Spanish, and links to tutorial videos (also in English and Spanish). Each project will be designed to enhance at-home-learning for students that might not be getting as much science support as they attend school online. Students will explore science concepts like lift, gravity, tension, and drag in a playful and creative way.
