The Taming of the Shrew
Lanes Coven Theater Co launches an annual outdoor summer theater experience with Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew, performing 8/26--9/5 (labor day weekend) total 9 shows over the course of 2 weeks in 2021. We make "theater like you've never seen," empowering the community that “this is their theater." We draw on local established artists and community networks to collaborate on a DIY and collective experience that everyone can be proud of. Family friendly and fun; we'll introduce kids to the magic of Shakespeare. Educators can come free, because we deliberately want to give them inspiration through our use of Shakespeare. We also know how stressful the pandemic has been for them. Our production of Taming is set in fishing hay-day 1910's Gloucester, and brings Shakespeare down to earth, or "to the sea in ships..." We have a company of trained theater actors and designers, with ties to Cape Ann, who are anxious to share their talents and contribute to the culture here. Our venue is the large garden backyard of the Lanes Cove House on 6 Andrews Street, owned by Jane and Richard Rose, whose idea it was that we do Shakespeare there. (NOTE Lanes Coven will only do this with Gloucester City Council permission via a Special Events permit, and after the City deems Stage 4 COVID-19 Safety Plans) Lanes Coven has a 5 and 10 year residency plan. Taming is just the beginning. Outdoor theater will be a yearly endeavor. (We plan indoor off season theater as well.) To the young and old, agile and differently abled, familiar with Shakespeare or new to it, Lanes Coven will be a destination! Our diverse local and out of town audiences will return to see what we have to offer, contributing to Gloucester's Economy/Tourism: going to museums, Restaurants/Bars, staying in B&Bs or weekly rentals. All this will have a positive impact on community in Gloucester. We’re also in talks with James Cooke at Gloucester High, to offer standard-aligned Shakespeare workshops in the 2021 school year.
