Our Rights, Our Community
Our Rights is a peer led project that supports women from a refugee background to know their rights, find their voice and empower themselves and each other to speak up and be heard. It was run as an exploratory project last year to bring women from two grass roots projects - MILK and Unity Sisters together in solidarity. The feedback from the training and workshops that the women attended has been really positive and there is a real hope that it can continue. Activities have included workshops from the Red Cross, mental health and wellbeing sessions with herbalists and yoga practitioners, training from the Advocacy Project, learning media skills and how to make a radio show, gardening and environmental awareness, developing an educational resource for schools and hosting food and information stalls at various local events and festivals. Our Rights is a smaller part of MILK, which is a social enterprise that has been around for 7 years with the aim to support and empower women from a refugee background. This is the first properly peer led project we have had and it has been transformative for us. We have been able to facilitate a group of women coming together on their terms, fitting their schedules and in their own language, as well as English.
