Intergenerational Communication at the Garage Sale

This project aims to enhance community connectivity through building bridges for intergenerational communication. The project has three specific objectives. Firstly, it aims to create opportunities for intergenerational conversations between Penn State students and older adults residing in State College's retirement homes. Secondly, the project aims to alleviate the financial burdens faced by Penn State students combating poverty. Last but not least, it endeavors to facilitate international students' understanding of American community culture and the tradition of Garage/Yard Sales.

For nearly two decades, Foxdale Village, a non-profit continuing care retirement community in State College, has organized a half-day, community-wide Garage Sale in April and September. This bi-annual event involves the sale of a diverse range of items, including but are not limited to furniture, books, kitchenware, sheets and towels, and holiday decorations, all at remarkably low prices. The meticulous planning and organization of this half-day event span months and are entirely orchestrated by the residents of the retirement community. Donations from incoming, current, and deceased residents contribute to the array of goods available. The funds raised during the event do not go to any individual's pocket. Instead, they are allocated to support various activities and clubs in which the residents actively participate.

Despite consistently drawing local customers, the Garage Sale struggles to reach Penn State students, particularly those facing financial challenges. Limited awareness among students results in missed opportunities to purchase items at significantly reduced prices and to interact with older adults who have rich life experiences. To address this, I propose an increased effort in publicizing the event among Penn State students, especially those facing financial challenges or hailing from low-income backgrounds.
