Hero School Green Building Projects
Hero School, located in San Juan Comalapa, Guatemala. departs from traditional rote-memorization based teaching through an innovative project-based learning curriculum. In 2024, our students at Hero School will plan and implement green building infrastructure projects.
Students will plan, design, and implement their infrastructure projects across their classes. With the permission of the community, Hero School students conduct surveys in social studies class to evaluate living conditions. Then, they design their assigned infrastructure project in math class. At the end of the school year, the students go to the community to construct their project for a family identified in the survey in teams composed of students, teachers, builders, and volunteers. Construction materials include a combination of traditional materials and “ecobricks,” which are glass and plastic bottles filled with plastic pollution which has been removed from the environment.
