Our project would be a first-of-its kind support group for San Francisco County parents of incarcerated children.

It's not fun or witty, but is an urgent issue and one that creates community cohesion.

Having a child incarcerated can be a distressing, lonely experience. Parents typically have had no previous experience in the criminal justice system, which has separated their child from their loved ones and detained them in a severe, grim setting. A language barrier contributes to a further sense of confusion and uncertainty. Our bilingual parent support group educates parents with a parenting curriculum, increases their ability to advocate for their child, and prepares them for challenges they will face upon their child’s return. Active participation of parents in the rehabilitation process of incarcerated youth is associated with improved outcomes and reduced likelihood of their child reoffending.
