The Dobie Middle School Family Resource Center
The Dobie Middle School Family Resource Center is part of one of Austin Voices for Education and Youth’s Family Resource Centers. The resource center was created when concerned individuals noticed that the closest food bank to 78753 and 78758 was too far away to service those in need within the community. Ninety-six percent of the students who attend Dobie Middle School are on free or reduced lunch, so there was definitely the need for a food pantry within walking distance of the school. Subsequently, the Dobie Middle School Family Resource Center began operating in October of 2016.
The primary activities of the Dobie Middle School Family Resource Center are supplying families in need with nutritious food, needed clothing, and various medical services. The Center also function as a wrap-around support for the surrounding community, with a social worker to refer families to needed services and a free library of books English, Spanish, Chinese, and Burmese for any family who wants them. A $1000 grant from the Austin Awesome Foundation will provide funding to keep the Center open during the summer months.
