Embracing Abilities, Building Community

The objective of this project is to provide an educational 60-minute documentary showcasing the abilities and contributions of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), and how they benefit the community in a positive manner. The perception of people with IDD has long carried a societal bias of negative thoughts and emotions. Stereotypical viewpoints of this population may result in discrimination and prejudice or cause a feeling of discomfort and avoidance. Regardless of the manifestation of social interactions, it becomes a critical task to start to impact change by shifting away from a society with disability bias and towards one of acceptance and support.
The focus of this documentary is to provide a resource that shows the beneficial contributions of the IDD population and the agencies that support them alongside organizations that employ them. To bring the most comprehensive viewpoint of the IDD community, five non-profit organizations are collaborating to bring this project to life. Representing the various segments of the IDD community will be The Arc of Carroll County with a focus on residential living and group homes; Penn Mar will focus on community day services and programs; Target in partnership with McDaniel college will highlight a graduate student working with a person with IDD; Bello Machre will focus on employment within the community; and Community Media Center will act as producer and director for the project.
By telling the story of how this population integrates into the community, it serves as a tool to break down barriers and change perceptions of those that may lack an understanding of their abilities and productivity. The protagonists will provide the main voice to the documentary and will be an encouragement to the community to perceive those with IDD in a different light; one that brings positivity and empowerment and helps to end the disability bias.
