Jazz4Justice Juneteenth Festival
Jazz4Justice, Gallery O on H, and Legal Services of the District of Columbia are partnering to present the first Jazz4Justice Juneteenth Festival in DC on the observed Juneteenth Holiday, Monday, June 20th, 2022. The event will feature live jazz bands, a gallery art walk, and programming with a purpose through jazz. There will be no charge to attend and audience members will be encouraged to donate to DC Legal Aid in order to support their Eviction Defense Project.
The mission of Jazz4Justice is to raise public awareness and funds for Legal Aid and jazz programs. We do this by forming collaborative partnerships with the legal community, the business community, the music community, and universities. Traditionally, Jazz4Justice concerts have been offered at universities in partnership with a legal organization in Virginia. We have recently expanded our vision beyond universities to include presenting a top tier jazz guest artist, Wycliffe Gordon, and presenting an outdoor event with a festival atmosphere. Our goal is to expand Jazz4Justice into Washington, D.C.
Jazz4Justice is a fully volunteer run non-profit 501(c)3 organization.
The vision for our first Jazz4Justice Juneteenth Festival is an afternoon of fun, community, and social justice activism through jazz music at Gallery O on H. We envision an atmosphere like New Orleans where passersby will hear the music and enter the alley with plants, arbor and hanging lights setting the scene. There will be a band on the patio, and all artists are encouraged to highlight social justice as part of their music. There will be a jam session hosted by our partners at the Washington Women in Jazz Festival which will allow community members and attorney jazz musicians to join in the music. Volunteers will help check IDs and provide bracelets for the bar. There is an optional suggested $20 donation to benefit DC Legal Aid’s Eviction Defense Project. The art display will be curated with Juneteenth in mind.
