Five Islands School Community Garden Project

We are excited to be in the beginning stages of designing a Sensory and Bush Tucker Garden in an unused space at our school. Our current playground set up does not include any spaces that allow students to interact with nature, as our school is set up on a series of decks, off the ground.

The garden will hopefully be designed to engage students in hands-on learning while connecting them with nature. This project will involve collaboration with local community members, including The Men's Shed, as well as students and staff from neighboring schools, who will share their expertise in setting up the space.

The garden will offer opportunities for students to explore a wide range of subjects, from Mathematics and Science to English, through practical experiences. We aim to grow produce that can be incorporated into cooking programs, teaching students the concept of 'farm to table.' In addition, we plan to create a Yarning Circle and a variety of sensory installations, ensuring the garden caters to the needs of all students and provides a calming, enriching environment for learning and interaction.

Our aim is to build at least 8 garden beds of various sizes, accessible to all students. We would need to furnish these with dirt and plants. We also want to create different sensory installations, such as a mud kitchen, chalk drawing boards, and a sandpit. At one end of the garden, we would like to create an accessible Yarning Circle and 'Bush Tucker' garden.
