Ocean Monitoring wth SmartBuoys & Community Action

Ocean health is a global crisis affecting livelihoods, biodiversity, and climate stability. While advanced technologies exist to monitor ocean data in developed countries, coastal nations like Ghana need more affordable tools to track critical ocean metrics. REEFlect (https://reeflect.org), a youth-driven organization has developed Smart Buoys, with sensors that collect real-time data on pH levels, salinity, temperature, and wave patterns.

In partnership with Clean Ocean Project Ghana (COPGH), a grassroots NGO focused on environmental conservation and youth education, this project will deploy Smart Buoys along Ghana’s coastline. The real-time data collected will support critical sectors such as marine conservation, climate monitoring, fisheries management, and maritime operations. To maximize impact, the data will be shared with local research institutions, government ministries, and agencies to enhance marine ecosystem monitoring and climate resilience efforts.

Additionally, COPGH will organize beach cleanups and educational durbars, raising awareness among local communities about ocean health and conservation. This initiative not only bridges technology and community action but also strengthens Ghana's capacity to protect its waters.
