Inclusive Music and Dance Therapy Project

We are seeking funding to partner with Open Spot Theater to create a unique opportunity for our participants to learn about the theater and showcase their talents through a community performance. This project will allow individuals with developmental disabilities to engage in a creative process, develop new skills, and experience the joy and empowerment of expressing themselves through theater- without any financial barriers to participation.
Open Spot theater is a unique Theater experience that began in 2012 in Metro Detroit. The company was created on the idea that performing arts should be accessible to ALL people. Open Spot allows its actors to be fully included in the planning process. This is perfect because our participants will be able to help pick songs, form plotlines, and choose characters based on their own skills and abilities.
Often, our feelings and thoughts are kept in the body as forms of positive and negative energy. Individuals with disabilities sometimes struggle to articulate these feelings and are typically not given the resources to express these emotions. Song and dance are safe ways in which our members can participate in therapeutic practices to assist them in releasing built up energy rather than suppressing it.
