Art & Equity Conversations
Oakland Art Murmur amplifies the voices of Oakland artists and arts workers and connects the public to the vibrant and eclectic art of Oakland. OAM promotes historically underserved artists and art spaces, prioritizes and identifies opportunities for artists to be compensated for their work, and empowers artists of all backgrounds and experiences through education, opportunity and financial access. Since our founding in 2006, OAM has been the purveyor of the arts scene in Oakland - ensuring the vitality and financial opportunities for local artists and visual arts venues.
In 2020, OAM launched the Art & Equity Conversations series featuring BIPOC Art leaders chronicling the Bay Area art scene, interrogating the traditional fine arts narrative, diving into BIPOC cultural movements, and honoring essential contributions by BIPOC Bay Area artists. The panelists for these events are established and emerging artists, curators, and culture makers in the SF Bay Area, each offering a unique perspective on the often challenging and frequently surprising topic of race: what it has meant to them as they have pursued and attained success in the arts. The Art & Equity Conversations attracts audiences interested in arts, entertainment, and entrepreneurial life - providing an environment that welcomes all to challenge their perceptions of art locally, nationally, and globally and tackle crucial issues facing artists and the arts today.
Topics for the series include: Public Art as Community Expression, NFTs, Afro-Futurism, Black Artists in Fine Art, and Holding Space. OAM’s goal is to establish the series as a quarterly flagship event featuring artists as experts in their fields and held in unique, accessible arts venues to broaden the audience’s awareness and appreciation of creative spaces.
