New Life Vests for Free Public Kayaking in NYC
Our September grant was awarded to the Manhattan Community Boathouse, an all-volunteer non-profit that offers free kayaking for the public at Pier 96 in Hudson River Park.
Our program runs all summer long, from June through October, every Saturday and Sunday and Monday and Tuesday evenings, and in that time we provide a safe and free on-water experience for roughly 10,000 people from all walks of life and from all over the world.
During our program hours, anyone can walk up to our pier, complete a waiver get a brief set of instructions, and get out on the river. It's just that simple. We break down every possible barrier to entry, while still providing a safe and world-class experience for everyone that comes through our gate.
We're going to buy $1,000 of new life jackets to keep our kayakers safe! We have roughly 50 people on the water at a time, and life jackets are $20 each and last roughly 5 seasons, so with $1,000 we can replace all of our worn-out life jackets and ensure the safety of our program participants for the next five seasons of our program!
The 2024 kayaking season isn't over yet! Free kayaking will be taking place this weekend and next weekend from 1-6pm at Pier 96 near 56th Street in Hudson River Park.
