The growing population and lack of affordable housing in cities and towns like Lusaka is forcing many people in to unplanned settlements, without sustainable access to basic sanitation. While ‘killer’ water-borne diseases like cholera, typhoid and dysentery are widespread in these communities, we believe this is mainly due to poor human waste disposal. Research shows 40% of the world’s population lack access to a toilet. This social enterprise will explore growth opportunities in the bio digester toilet business.

• What is the problem?

Provide a clean toilet that safely disposes off pee and poo right where it is produced.

• What is the solution?

Environmentally responsible low cost portable self-flashing biomass digester.

• How does it work?

The user inserts their sh*t in the pit. The pit instantly flushes the sh*t using gravity and, enables an anaerobic process that converts the sh*t in to biogas (a renewable non-smelling natural gas) that is stored and used for cooking, heating and lighting on-the-go. The toilet also produces non-toxic bio fertilizer that is sold and used for farming.

• How is it unique or different?

-Increase the convenience of using the toilet
-Minimize the likelihood of contaminating the surrounding air, water and land.
-Minimize the likelihood of disease outbreaks like cholera, typhoid and dysentery.
-Minimize the cost of flashing the toilet using water.
-Minimize the cost of using electricity, LPG and charcoal for cooking and heating.
-Increase the possibility of having uninterrupted power at home.
-Minimize the inconvenience of power-cuts and load shading.

• What’s the vision for the future?

Cleaner, greener cities.
