Empowering Afghan Women Refugees through Literacy
A $1000 grant from the Austin Awesome Foundation will help fund a year of English Classes for 22 Afghan women in Austin who have never attended school. The program's mission is to empower 22 dedicated refugees with essential English proficiency, opening doors to new opportunities and brighter futures.
Two seasoned teachers conduct engaging, two-hour classes three times a week, with two English-speaking refugees provide childcare during class times in order to allow mothers to focus fully on their education. Dedicated volunteers assist in the classroom, guiding students through forming letters, recognizing and pronouncing them, and constructing English words. Women break their isolation by meeting other Afghan women and American volunteers, and a daily tea break fosters community.
