Hockey for Autism
My husband and I started Hockey for Autism in response to a lack of programming available for children with Autism. Hockey for Autism was founded with a single goal - to offer safe, fun, non-competitive hockey to children on the spectrum desiring to play. Our program is for children aged 7 to 14 with basic skating skills and runs for 24 weeks (September to March) at National Training Rinks in Newmarket. Hockey for Autism provides a fun and supportive environment teaching kids both basic hockey skills, as well as, helping them build their self-confidence and the experience of being part of a team. Our program consists of 30 minutes of fun hockey drills followed by a 30 minute scrimmage game.
Both my husband and I provide on ice coaching with the support of our great community of parent volunteers and player mentors who provide dressing room support, help manage the player benches and provide on ice encouragement to all our players. The cost of the program is $160 which includes a jersey and hockey socks, as well as, the year end team party..
