Our Mothers' Kitchens
Our Mothers’ Kitchens centers Black foodways and cultural preservation through the exploration of food and literature. Using the writing of four black women authors, Alice Walker, Ntozake Shange, Zora Neale Hurston and Vertamae Grosvenor the project emphasizes the art and ritual of cooking, authorship of one’s own story, self and communal care and celebrating the richness and complexity of black language. This all manifests over three days of reading, writing, cooking and eating together.
We lead a free cooking and creative writing camp each summer at Sankofa Community Farm in Southwest Philly, in addition to a community dinner series called In Search of Our Foremothers' Kitchens. We have been the recipients of the Leeway Foundation Art & Change Grant, a 2018 A Blade of Grass Fellowship for Socially Engaged Art and continue to run by the the support of many family, friends and strangers throughout Philadelphia and the country who value and share in our work.
