Mountain View Mural Walk
The Mountain View Mural Walk is a neighbor-led proposal to develop a destination public art project in Anchorage’s Mountain View neighborhood; a holistic effort to cultivate vibrant public spaces, increase walkability, spur economic growth, and support community wellbeing.
Organized through the Mountain View Community Council in collaboration with residents, property owners, and a diverse group of standout Alaska artists, the project seeks to install a series of original murals on participating buildings throughout the neighborhood’s pedestrian core.
The Mountain View neighborhood is a compact cross-section of Alaska itself. While we face wide socio-economic disparities, our vibrant neighborhood is close-knit, inclusive, and home to multigenerational families from across Alaska and around the world. The main street — Mountain View Drive — is lined with family-owned restaurants, small businesses, bus stops, and an urban farm space. Local civic institutions include the Hispanic Cultural Center and Alaska Museum of Science and Nature. Children, elders, and everyone in between recreate via local parks and trails. Several murals by prominent local artists already brighten the street.
The Mountain View Mural Walk will amplify and celebrate all these things, forming a cohesive, eye-catching route along Mountain View Drive. Neighborhood residents can enjoy brighter public spaces, and travelers staying in downtown hotels will be encouraged to walk or bike in via the Ship Creek Trail, tour the mural walk, then stay to visit the science museum, Grow North Farm, and local shops and restaurants — primarily Black, Asian, and Pacific Islander-owned businesses in a historically low-income commercial corridor.
Through vibrant original art, we can cultivate new opportunities for our entire community.
