We are currently supporting a community meal project lead by those in the asylum system and part of Merseyside Solidarity Knows No Borders. The aim of the project is to provide a regular social space to share food, build connections, organise and find new forms of solidarity and mutual aid. So far, we have supported four highly successful, ‘pre-party’ events, working with Solidarity Knows No Borders, Comforts Angels, Asylum Link Liverpool, Many Hands One Heart and Liverpool Migrant Solidarity Network, primarily with women asylum seekers and refugees. These groups are Liverpool based organisation either led by refugees or collaborative efforts between those with and without citizenship. The meals have been attended by around 40 persons per event. They have been invited through established whatsap groups as well as via paper invitations exchanged at outside the Home Office where people go to ‘sign’. We have had people joining us from as far as Chester, Widnes and Manchester. Alongside food and informal conversation, we also got representatives from some key service provides to join us and were able to give advice ‘on the spot’. For example, someone facing eviction in Manchester was directed to the Manchester Law Centre at one meal. Volunteers have also helped provide entertainment at the meals, this has included a yoga, dance, music and art workshops. We know this had meant a lot to those who have attended, and there is keen interest and enthusiasm for developing the community meal projects. Our events ‘Red City Solidarity Disco’ have been funding the meals so far including transport. These events are organised after the meals, so refugees and asylum seekers can stay (for free) at the party with our wider community. Increasingly people are wanting to join us after the community meal which is great but comes at a loss of fundraising revenue. The transport costs are also significant though make a big difference to participation from this very low income group.
