FoodFaith PlantingSeeds interfaith/cultural garden
FoodFaith was set up last year as a not-for-profit organisation with the support of leading faith and sustainability organisations. The major aims of FoodFaith are to foster social cohesion and engage people with food sustainability.
FoodFaith's cornerstone initiative is the Planting Seeds community garden which has been set up with the support of Lane Cove Council which provided some land in their new Hughes Park in Burns Bay Road, Lane Cove.
A volunteer horticulturist designed our fabulous community garden in the shape of a flower with each "petal" planter box dedicated to food plants that have significance to different groups. For example, we have plants that have special spiritual and cultural meanings to Indigenous Australians, Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims, Jews, and Christians. Everyone comes together at least monthly to tend, water and harvest together and each group takes it in turn to lead a workshop and/or discussion on their knowledge and practices. The garden also provides local community beds and allotments. The idea is to plant seeds for fertile common ground. We had our working bees on the weekend and attracted over 40 people with locals from neighbouring buildings, and representatives from many different faith groups and other groups such as the Lane Cove Sustainability Action Group.
Lane Cove Council has assisted us with just over $1,000 which is helpful but we are still needing funding for functional compost bins. Please see below.
We think the project is awesome but are keen to make it even more so! Thanks for your consideration.
